Am new and have made quite good progress (I think) in a short space of time.

I started with a little brass 40mm Sterling and moved onto a Master 3 (#317), this little bastard had me for a while but I suddenly had an epiphany with a bogota single pick (upside down!) and can pop him in a few seconds now. I moved onto a 50mm laminated Kasp 130 and am starting to think I over reached a bit too soon, what do you think?

Should also add that the keyway in this padlock is seriously tight for space

Maybe I should take a step back and try a 'normal' 5 pin first ?

Yes I would say that's a leap. Going from a master no3 to a lock with 5 pin stacks, some mushroom pins, and a tight key way is really difficult. Are you only using the Bogota? Have you learned how to single pin pick? Raking a lock with mushrooms and a tight key way will not work all the time. Tight key ways and security pins require manipulating one pin at a time called single pin picking. My advise would be to get a half diamond, a few different size hooks, and top of the key way tension wrenches (pry bars). I would also advise picking up a re keyable 5 pin lock. I recommend Mr. Wizards practice lock, it's fantastic to learn to pick on. You can re pin the lock as you progress and it comes with security pins and even master pins. If you need something less expensive pick up a cheap 5 pin deadbolt and you can get mushroom/spools from any local locksmith shop or order them online. One you have the picks and the lock practice your single pin picking. Try digital blues beginner lock picking exercise. Once you can confidentiality SPP the lock with all 5 pins, go back and take out two or three stacks and add in your spool pins, then work your way back up to five stacks again.

I have only been using Bogota's but I got a set of Petersons (15pc) this week so I'm starting from scratch again with a hook and a half diamond on a small brass 3 pin padlock...it's MUCH harder than raking but I'm sure it will make me a better picker in the long run

Picking a lock with the SPP technique is the best way to get your lockpicking skills down. When you master SPP, you can master most pin tumbler, tubular, wafer locks, with great success. So before you go on raking, stop the raking and do some picking.

Thanks for the tips, I've ditched the Bogota's for now and have gone back to a hook, half diamond etc. Not having as much success but practice makes perfect I'm sure.

Yes. Practice makes perfect, and then soon you'll be a picking god. Well... not soon, but you know what I mean. Try the tennis ball technique. I've opened a ton of locks with that technique ;D
