Driver pin getting stuck?

Postby buddykiller » 6 Oct 2014 4:21

so i bought a master 6835 for my first 5 pin practice lock, i picked it a few dozen times and then pin 3 started to feel like it wasn't there at all. as i ran my hook over the pins it felt like it was over set but the lock continued to work fine with the key and when picking i didn't have to pick it. as far as feedback is concerned, there wasn't anything from 3, it just felt like it wasn't there at all, almost like somebody removed the stack all together. i took the cylinder out, removed all the pins and springs yet couldn't find anything wrong or any damage. after reassembling the cylinder it feels just like it did when i took it out of the box.

i did everything i could think of to the lock before disassembly to see if i could get it to function properly but nothing worked. could this be chalked up to master just being sloppy with tolerances?

Well, I don't think Master is very renowned for having great tolerances, so that may very well be it. I've never had that issue with a brand new lock, but when an old lock is doing that, I generally try to lubricate it and drag a small hook over all of the pins to kind of work it in. That usually frees it up. You are saying that it's picking open just fine, so it seems like the plug has a badly drilled hole for that pin, or some other metal getting in the way due to bad finishing. I wouldn't worry about it too much, being a Master lock.
Chance favors the prepared mind.

Don't break your picks over that lock. It's given me plenty of headaches in the past because its a good quality lock compared to the super massed manufactured locks like the number fives, threes, etc.

I once found a chopped lock on the floor and it was that model.

I needed to get plenty of WD-40 inside of the lock to get it to give me feedback, and the tolerances were beating me up as soon as I began picking the lock.

What I like about the lock is the American like core inside of the lock, and the re-pinning ability to it. I placed serrated spools, and home made pins to make it one hell of a lock

lol, yea, it's much nicer than the no. 3 and no. 140 that i bought for practice, American has certainly influenced this lock. the only thing that gets me about this particular lock is that due to the torque required to actually turn the plug there have been times where i have been playing with it for 10+ mins trying to find a binder only to realize that it's already picked. i really like that i've got an empty chamber i can fill once i'm ready to jump to 6. still wanting a master 410 though, then i can start branching out into better quality locks.

i was just curious if anybody could maybe figure out what was up. i expected a spring to be wrapped around the driver or something like that but like i said couldn't find anything wrong or any signs of damage, and now it's right back to normal so who knows, probably just a fluke.

i broke my first pick on the aforementioned no. 3 and quickly learned the difference between a set and unset pin shortly thereafter.
