First lock dismantled!

Postby Danbot » 7 Jan 2015 10:31

Well, I took apart and reassembled my first lock today! And I only lost one spring!!! :x

The lock is a cheap "Bird" night latch. The question I have is about one of the pins. There were no spool pins or serrated pins, but driver pin #3 has a large bevel. Does that make it harder to set? Would that be the last pin you would need to manipulate to the shear line?

What do you mean by bevel? Did it look like this?

No, not fancy like that. Maybe chamfered is a better word?

is the bevel in the middle or at the top or bottom?

If you post a photo for us, that would probably help a lot. upload to http://imgur.com or tinypic or photobucket and Copy/Paste into your reply.

Thanks

Unfortunately, the camera in my cell phone really sucks! But yes, the pins in your photo are the key pins beveled on both ends. In my lock the #3 driver pin is beveled on the bottom end. I'm just wondering how that would be able to catch at the shear line. Does that mean it would be the last pin that would need to be set?

no, if you look up Binding Order in the Search page, I posted a diagram that another member drew a while back explaining in which order locks are picked and that all locks are different in which pin gets picked first and last. Your pins shape is to help the lock turn smoothly, at least that's what I believe.

Well, I managed to get a re-pinning set over the weekend and I replaced the spring I lost. No luck picking it tho. I am going to hold off on this one until my new "slim" picks arrive! Thanks for all the help and advice guys! I am having a great time learning this skill!!
