Is there a website for looking up lock information?

Postby ladylock1994 » 10 Jun 2015 20:40

Hello everyone!
I am new to the world of lock picking (been picking about two weeks) and I have a quick question for you guys.
Is there a website that you know of that hosts information on locks? I am having trouble figuring out what exactly is inside the locks I am working on, and it would also be great to look up locks that I would like to try next based on what I feel like I need practice with. I basically just want to know some simple statistics. For example, how many pins does this particular lock have? Does it have security pins? If so, what type and how many? Etc.
That is pretty much all I am really looking for. As a beginner, I feel like this would be a great resource to have.

Thank you! ;)

The search button here can help you find most locks. You can also look at http://www.lockwiki.org

+1 for Gordans advice. You will find more information here than almost anywhere else.

I suppose you mean www.lockwiki.com
BTW, does anybody know how to give them a notice on wrong dialing instructions for SG 8077/8088 locks there? I cannot find any EDIT pushbutton there, cannot create an account...

Just because you don't agree with the way they are written, doesn't mean they are wrong. They're not clearly written, that's for sure, but if it is really bothering you this much, send a PM to datagram on here, he maintains that site.

Or you can tell me the way you feel it should be written, and I can edit the LockWiki entry. (If I agree with how you feel it should be written).

Hi,
there are many ways how to describe it, but the instructions should not contain wrong steps.
The main problem at the lockwiki instruction set is the "three full revolutions" in the second step. The same problem is at the third step. The unexperienced user makes N full revolutions as stated and then thinks what to do next...and doesn't know that everything is lost and he must return to the first step.
One way how to correct it is to add one word: "Almost three full revolutions" were correct then. But it will look strange. Such words like "almost, not too much, just enough" etc. in instruction manuals are confusing. Thus, a better way is to keep the instructions more similar to that ones found in SG or LG manuals. My English is not enough good to do it myself, simple but correct. In one thread I recommended to add a short note - and it was taken as unmannered from me.

Another thing is that it seems to me, that another approach were easier to understand and to follow. I described it in another thread - it's based on 3/2/1 full revolution(s) followed by further rotation in the same direction until the desired code number is aligned with the index. But I am far away from sticking on that - it's simply my opinion and I use this method for myself. And as I see from another PM received recently, I am not alone in that.

Cheers!
Ivan
