Luck vs skill

at what point do you go from well that was luck to i know how to open locks.lol i know how it works and what is supposed to happen but still feel like i luck into most of my picks

When you "know" what the pins are doing. If you are able to narrate what you're doing, ex: pin number 5, binding, set... pin 4, not binding, pin 3, binding, set.. oh, false set. And so on...

This isn't always true. It would likely be true for spping, but I can consistently rake some locks open, and it's not skillful. Some locks I just put a pick in and they open.

I can agree with this completely. While I have a handful of locks that I can look at and they open. I have this one padlock that last week I could pick it front to back and back to front, this week I cant get it to open at all. I am pretty sure last week was just lucky with this lock.

Unlike you hobbyists, I don't pick the same handful of locks every day for years on end.
When part of your job is picking locks you will know when the luck ended & the skill begins, grasshoppers
In my case it is often accompanied by a case of 'the sweats' while someone, or even a group of folks stand
around waiting to see what my next trick will be. I always like to find out too.

I suppose you meant not the exact same lock, but the same type, correct? I would call that skill also.

I suppose you meant not the exact same lock, but the same type, correct? I would call that skill also.

Interestingly enough, in the field you can see anything
& you are expected to know how to open & service it
Unless
you work for a scammer-lock co., then you are expected to know
how to drill it open & carry a replacement from home depot

Probably when you can think back on the lock you previously picked and think, that was skill. Also there is nothing wrong with getting lucky from time to time.
