Problem getting by a deep cut

Postby jeep_thing » 25 Feb 2016 19:12

Hi all- So I started with a Sparrows 4 piece pick set and their cutaway cylinder. I had no problem picking it and also not to much trouble opening my own Schlage residential door on first try.

But here's the thing- I can't pick the cutaway cylinder without looking at it, and I believe I know why. The 4th cut is deep, I don't have my gauge handy but I am guessing it is a 6. In trying to set pin 5 I accidentally set pin 4 too high, attempting to get by it without looking.

I am using the shallow hook that came in my set, would the configuration of this key require a longer hook?

Thanks in advance!

[newby disclaimer]

I'd say that's what deforest diamonds are for.

If you can pick it using the short hook when looking, you should definitely be able to do the same without looking - it's not like the geometry changes when you have eyes on it. ;)

Maybe try picking without looking, trying to visualize what is going on, and every one and a while check if the picture in your head was correct - and restart when it was wrong?

You can compare the depth of the hook to the key and you'll know for certain whether it's deep enough or not. :P
