Can you have too many security pins?

Postby PokemonCookies » 21 Mar 2016 15:14

Hello there I'm relatively new to picking security pins and I recently found out how to make them and have been stuffing my locks full of them. I wanted to know if filling my locks completely with security pins i.e. serrated, spools, drunken spools, stepped T pins, T pins. etc etc, top and bottom was a bad idea. I figured that If i jump in head first that I would advance quickly. Please let me know your opinions. Should I start with 1. What kind should I start with. What kind should I focus on. I don't want to start bad picking and practice habits since they will be harder to break than actually learning proper picking technique.

Well you shouldn't put all spool pins in unless you don't want the key to enter the lock smoothly. One pin should be an ordinary pin. Serrated pins are OK in all chambers.

It's fine for practice, but if you're pinning locks to go into actual use you should put in at least one regular top pin in each lock. With a lock pinned entirely with all security pins as the top pins it's possible to put the lock into a false set with barely any turning pressure. This can make key insertion very rough because if you apply even the tiniest bit of torque while inserting the key, it'll stop the key in it's tracks until you get the plug straightened out again. Having one regular top pin helps keep the cylinder plug aligned for smoother key insertion.

*EDIT: Apparently Cledry types faster than me and beat me to the punch!
