Safe question

I bought a safe combination lock and was toying around with it, however, I noticed that, after awhile, my combo stopped working, so I looked inside. When the driver cam is spinning the entire wheel pack, at one point the first disk you see (or the disk that corrosponds to the last number) will stop moving for a second. Thus the last number in my combo is constantly changing. How do I fix this? I was attempting to change the combo with the change key when it started happening, I do not know if I could've messed something up when doing this. I appreciate any help you could give. Thank You.

This kind of a bad news/good news thing.

Bad news: You screwed it up.

Good news: Easy to fix. Whichever wheel isn't turning properly is actually still "unlocked" meaning either:

1. You didn't have the change key fully inserted.
2. Your change key is worn out and not engaging wheel(s) properly. Means you need a new change key.


To fix, simply line up the wheels to the change hole, insert your key FULLY into the lock, turn to unlock position, then turn to lock position. Once you've done that and you're sure the wheels are "locked" you'll need to decode the wheel pack and reset your combo.

That wheel isn't locked in place. You need to put the change key into it and rotate it until it is halfway between clicks.

Hmm...just had another thought...is this a new or used lock?

Oh oh...um...well....try the change key trick first and let us know how that goes...if the wheel continues to act like that you have "other" problems.

Unfortunately before I posted I played around with the change key on only the first disk. So that means the first disk may be unlocked while the rest or locked, or vise versa. How do you know when the disks are lock. By the way, what are the ''other'' problems I may have. Thank you a lot for the help.

If the wheels are locked then they should resist you holding them in place while spinning the dial. It's a tight fit but I can do this with my finger. Another method would be to line up the wheel notches and look down the change key holes. They should all line up.

I finally got it! Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate the help, as you may guess that safe combination lock was not cheap and if not for all of you I would of wasted a good amount of money. Again thanks a lot.

That's fortunate...other problems can include stuck or broken fly's, broken teeth on the inner wheel, dried grease, etc..some of which are obviously not really fixable.

On the wheel that you can see (the one that corrosponds with the last number) there are two notches, one that is just like all the other notches (or gates if you may) and then there is one that isn't as long and has steep edges. When I lined up the not-so-long notch it works just like the normal notch. So what is the purpose of the not-so-long notch? Thank You

This other notch wouldnt happen to be, say 10 numbers off from the "correct" final combo would it?

Yes it is. Does it have something to due with the fact that when changing the combo you have to turn the lock ten numbers from the last at the end?

That is interesting about changing the combination. I don't remember what model of lock you have, but I was thinking about a "duress" combination. If you are ever forced to give the combination, or must dial it under duress (think robbery) you subtract 10 from the last number. The safe opens, but an alarm is tripped.
