Combination forgotten

Postby AndyAquila » 9 Apr 2016 8:35

I have done a bit of picking after a short introductory course but I have a problem new to me.

I have a lock for a graphics connector on a computer/projector for which I have forgotten the code. Is there an easy way of opening and resetting the combination please? I know the easiest answer is to throw it away and get a new one but ...:-)

A shim would seem to be the answer but I can't see a way to get access to do that. Any suggestions please?

It is a Defcon PC lock with 4 digits. I think it is made by Targus but can't be sure. It is several years old.

I have taken some pictures to see if they help at all but can't see how to load them here :-(

Need to use an image hosting site then link to them (imgur.com), but everyone is leery of helping new posters open locks we aren't sure belong to people.

If we helped you out with an easy way to open and reset that lock, then our instructions might in the future help someone who is trying to steal a laptop or projector from their campus or office.

There are certain locks we just don't openly discuss here, and usually it's the kinds of locks that are on vending machines, laundry coin boxes, school lockers, and combination locks on laptops, etc.

These locks are by no means high security, and you can of course just rip it off or cut it off, but that's up to you.

I suggest hitting youtube for some videos about shimming the defcon targus lock, that's my best advice.

Thanks for understanding why we don't hand out instructions to every lock out there, just trying to keep the public a little safer.
