Best Kaba Bumps

Postby Twoply » 19 Nov 2004 19:51

Just a quick question about bumps on the blade and tooth side at the shoulder of a Best key. Under the Best logo it says "patented by Kaba," next to the numbers 3902, on the reverse side it has a 6 digit number cleanly stamped on it, then a few letters and numbers that appear to be hand done, as in not perfectly aligned. Also it is stamped KB near the shoulder. The KB looks like a blank number. I've done some research and come accross some talk about there being additional bumps on some higher sercurity locks that engage some additional ring in a core. The lock this fits has a rounded out (convex?) keyway that protrudes out. I'm guessing this key/ lock system is what I read about? If so how does this work? I usually take apart a lock to see it's inner workings but this one's a mystery. We are gutting out a building and the owners gave us a master key to facilitate our work.

BTW, the building is full of Best cores that are going to get thrown in the dumpster. Are they worth anything to anyone? I have tens of them that I practice on and would be happy to help some other hobbists out. In the past I've found the control key and recovered many cores before they met a wasteful disposal.

Thanks
Mike

Yes, I would like some. I think with an offer like that you are going to get many requests. Which city are you in?

I would definately be interested in some of these cores.

For what its worth, they are Kaba Peaks cores. The idea here is that the extra "bumps" engage another pin in the lock, allowing the cylinder to turn if all the pin stacks are aligned at a shearline. You can use a carefully made wishbone tension wrench to take care of that extra pin.

Blanks

Postby Twoply » 19 Nov 2004 22:29

I'm having a very hard time finding Best KB blanks. Should they be more difficult to order or are they just very rare or old perhaps?
Thanks

They're patented and proprietary...Meaning that the only way to get the blanks is to order them direct from the factory or from a licensed distributor. The factory and the distributors have a listing of which keyways a customer may order and usually a very few people whom can place a valid order for the blanks.

They're still worth saving for hobbyists as the keyways can make picking a royal pain (both of ours are monsters if you have anything longer than a 6 bottom pin). Even the tame bittings are quite a challenge to pick. You might try getting ahold of one of the maintenance people or a building manager and offer him some cash for the cores if he can give you the keys to go with them. If he has uncut blanks to go with the locks that can be like finding diamonds in your mulch pile. :D

Let me know what price you decide on, I might be interested. A topic in buy sell trade might be a good way to do this.

I've posted twice on the selling/ trade forum and both of them have been deleted. Who can I contact to find out why they are being erased?

Thanks

Mike,
This is just a guess: Did you include an email address to the post's? If so, this is against the forum rules. Has a Mod contacted you about why the post's have been removed?

Ah I think its because you have under 10 posts. Theres a rule in the B-S-T about needing to have 10 posts to sell.
