Master lock 140d

Postby DerekM804 » 19 Mar 2017 22:00

Hi guys my question is I know supposedly a master lock 140 has at least one spool pin and I had recently just purchased a 140 D and I tried to Google it to see if that is the same thing as just the 140 or it's different because I'm making sure that I bought the right lock so I have a master padlock that has at least a security pin in it if anybody knows if 140 D means anything different today please let me know or is it just the same thing

As far as I can tell the only thing the "D" notation means is that they're keyed different. 140KA means keyed alike.
I have 5 Master 140s and I honestly can't tell there is a spool pin in it...Everything I see online says the 140 has a spool, but if I were to pick one up and pick it I would disagree because there's certainly no feeling of spools, no false set, I don't know.

Maybe it's just a Master Lock quality spool.

From what I hear, the newer Master 140 locks are five pins with no spools. The older ones were four pins with spools.

Mine are all older 4-pin models. If I get some free time soon I'll drill one out so I can get at the pins and see what's inside.

Thanks for the replys. The only thing I was able to find was from Bosnianbills website he says the master 140s have three spool and one standard but like some of you said he thinks the newer ones are very poor and recommends to try and get an older one. I bought mine from eBay and its new in package so I'm going to assume it's newer. So I took Bosnianbill advice and he said there is a brinks 4 pin with spools that's equivalent and the Abus 55/40 is also with 4 pins 3 spool and 1 standard so I ordered the Abus! I have an Abus 72/40 but the 6 pins are kicking my but and the very tight keyway! Anyway thanks for the help! I'm loving this hobby and trying to tackle these spools is fun and challenging!

Moving up from Master Lock to Abus. Best of luck.

Have you been able to get the Abus 72/40 open? You mentioned that it was giving you a hard time, but I don't know if that means inconsistent success or none at all.

Well the master 140 finally arrived and if there are security pins in there it's pretty much like there aren't because it feels like I'm picking a regular master lock so I've had no problem with that but I also had ordered the Abus 5540 and that came today and I had no problem opening that but I can definitely notice the feedback that the spools are giving me but as to your question about the 7240 I have been able to open it may be three or four times but I think that was more by luck than anything it's a very tight keyway and for me to put tension on it I don't have but about 10 tension different tension wrenches right now ( started picking first week of January this year) and only one of them will fit in there so it's more tricky for me.

I have a newer 140 and it doesn't feel like any security pins are in there. If they are, they sure don't make the lock and more difficult.
