Padlock pin question. I am puzzled

Postby wvdeputy807 » 3 Oct 2017 12:54

I am relatively new to lockpicking, a 6-8 month noob with moderate experience. I've come across a brinks discus padlock model R60. The packaging states this is a 4 pin lock but looking at the key I count 5 pin valleys and by inspecting the inside of the lock I count 5 pins as well. The pin closest to the to the entry of the keyway, the first pin you can visually see, seems to have little to no spring tension and is a high cut pin I'm guessing a number 1 cut. I've had absolutely no luck in picking this lock. Can anyone please help me out here. Am I I nuts or is this some type of security some lock may employ.

It would not be the first time a lock was mislabeled. If you count five pins, then there are likely five pins. The disk type padlocks can be tricky to pick, and tension is important.

Do you have much experience with spool pins? That lock will have some.

When you say that it is probably a 1 cut, do you mean that you can see both the key pin and the driver pin?

I don't currently own an R60, but I had one and recently gave it away. Mine had 4 pins.

Here's a video from youtube showing one being picked. I copied the URL at the time when the picker shows the key. You can clearly see that the one he has is also a 4-pinner.
