Inserting core without control

Postby Dalmorloson » 20 Aug 2018 22:49

I am a carpenter who just installed a bunch of locksets on a job. I put the control keys in my pocket and took them home and cannot find them. I replaced all of the construction cores except one and need to insert one more core. The black plastic "core" is still in the lock. Can I insert the new core without the control key? I have no way to turn it the required 15°.

The locksmith who keyed up the cores should have no problem decoding the pins and making you a control key.

Yes. But you probably also want to let him and/or your customer know why you're asking. The compromise of a control key is at least as bad, if not worse, than the compromise of the system top master key. You may want to have all the cores (including the ones you already installed) switched to a new control key to maintain the security of the system.

Which is why I wanted the OP to let the locksmith to know that the control key is missing.

Ah, yes, reading it again, I now see what you did there. ;-) And thinking on it for a minute, I understand why. Hopefully I didn't too badly ruin your attempt to force the OP to be honest (or hopefully he just is on his own). I only mentioned it explicitly because there are a number of other ways he could have asked that would have prevented your desired message from getting through. Please feel free to use your mod powers on my previous reply if you believe more subtlety is called for...

Too late. He has been here today. But yeah, I was subtly trying to ring the warning bells with the locksmith.

You do realize that if he owe's up to having misplaced his keys he may very well either be liable for the expense
or get fired from his job, right?

It sounds possible that these keys are merely misplaced, the OP seems to feel they may even be inside his home
which would keep the building safe for the time being. Thing I notice about misplaced items is the harder you look the
better they hide

I like to try to get the misplaced item out of my mind for awhile & let it come to me

Yes, and probably OP does too, I think that's why Gordon was trying to be more subtle in his approach but I didn't catch it until after I had already posted and the edit window had expired so I couldn't fix it myself... :-(

Anyhow, between my post and your follow up here Bill, I guess that cat's thoroughly out of the bag. OP, if you see this, please be honest and own up to your mistake, yes it'll probably cost you some money but it's not worth sacrificing the security of your client's newly installed locks for.

I'll also note (for anyone else seeing this thread) that nobody here as yet has given any instructions or incantations whereby OP could obtain an additional control key from the locksmith without raising alarm bells, which is probably a good thing.

Hi all,

This is why contractors who are doing the site work at a building should never be the ones to do the final changeover of the locks. The building owner should do this themselves or have the locksmith who keyed the cores install them. A set of top level keys to the newly installed locks walked away and now the owner can not be sure of the security of their facility.
