question about discus style padlock Disk Buster jig

Postby ragebot » 9 Oct 2018 18:16

Wend to my boat today to prep for the hurricane hitting NW Florida. Stopped at my storage shed which was quite busy with many peeps doing the same thing. One guy had a cheap disk lock from China but no key. The owner of the storage shed was destructively getting it off. He was using something he called a Disk Buster. It is basically a jig used to align a drill to drill thru the pins and then let them fall out of the lock so you can use a screw driver to open the lock.

Anyone know about such a thing. I have to wonder how effective it would be since disk locks come in different sized. I was able to find the Disk Buster on the internet.

Disk buster is mainly for locksmiths who are uncertain how/where to drill to open the lock, they are great for newbs
of course no journeyman would use one

we all know about such tools and jigs but we do not discuss destructive entry details on this forum because we dont want to be teaching criminals.

You dont have to worry though, your common bad guy wont be walking around with one in his back pocket while looting after a hurricane. let me change the title of this thread while we are at it as it is not exactly a hurricane warning.

stay safe during the storm,

No problem with changing the title.

My biggest worry is dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane. While I only suffered trivial stuff like power outage and finding the shelves of the local Walmart almost bare I have friends who have lost much more.

From what I have read/seen on youtube the easiest way to get into a storage locker is to not attack the lock but the hasp it is attached to. In speaking to the manager of the storage facility after the storm surge had subsided he indicated a couple of the units had been damaged by either the owner or a thief by simply twisting the lock till the hasp gave way.

Since disk locks are often hard to defeat with bolt cutters he indicated he would probably be buying a Disk Buster instead of learning to pick locks.

Unfortunately since there is little chance the storage company will allow you to install a better hasp,
there seems to be little that can be done, other than paying more $$$ for an indoor unit, perhaps one
that is upstairs...

It would be interesting, albeit expensive, to construct a secondary door inside the storage unit, or some sort of extruded metal cage with nice locks on it, so if someone got into your outside padlock, when when they roll up the door, they get a surprise: another door or gate with more locks on it!
