Feedback problems from pins

Postby Atxguy » 28 Nov 2018 19:42

I am a complete noob (just got my Southord PXS-14 last night!). I have been reading a lot though while I waited for them to come in.

I have a Master Lock 141 that rakes almost immediately and I can SPP quickly. I have a Master Lock 1SSLADLF (1 series I guess?) that I can open in about 30 seconds or so, but get a false set quite often. I have a Kwikset 400T ANSI grade 3 lock that is fairly easy to open too.

My question is that I am having trouble feeling the individual pins and it seems that I get these open by just poking at them and adjusting the torque wrench. The Master Lock 1 gives good feedback sometimes, but other times I miss it completely.

What can I practice or work on to get more feel for the individual pins?

Also, what locks should I be looking at next to get better?

The Kwikset lock can be taken apart and you can remove every other pin. Then, with a gap between the three remaining pins, you will be much more likely to feel each one as you touch it. Practice picking this with your eyes closed and "seeing" the pick touch the pins with your mind's eye. The recommended method of starting with only one pin until you understand what to feel for cannot be under recommended.

As a practicing locksmith I have to get the lock open to make a key as quickly and efficiently as possible. Therefore, any method is worth trying, from raking, bumping, pick gun, single pin picking, impressioning (if a replacement is not easily available), and using the rotary pick. I wont be snobbish and demand that single pin picking is the only true style of lock picking, but you will be much better trained by learning it instead of taking the easy way just to get the lock open.

It takes practice and development of muscle memory in your hands.
