BEST Pad Lock opened but lost keys

Postby markcdn » 30 Dec 2018 0:08

I have a Best pad lock, its open but I do not have any keys for it. The core does not turn.
It does not have any magnetism, besides the ball bearings.
It has a very long 4-3/8 shackle from top of ball bearing cutout. 2"H x 1-5/8Wx7/8W and 6 or 7mm shackle diameter.
There is no bolt inside the open hole.
From my quick searches, there is a master key to get the keyway open.

I found this youtube video, lock is very similar to mine, with the emblem. Can assume in that video, that the lock was already locked and he picked it.

Questions
What do I need to do in order to get the keyway core out, and get a new one in there from a Locksmith?

How much will it cost for a new core with decent pins, serraded, spools, shims.

Is this lock average for picking?

I doubt non steel locks are any good at forceful attacks, like bolt cutters or grinders. So I am doubtful on this BEST lock.
Maybe I can atleast buy a hardened steel shackle from the Locksmith? or make one myself from the steel shop.
I know hardened steel locks are preferred, so I just keep looking, so many to choose from from reputable stores, Aucklands, Gregg, BSH. I just stay away from HD, Lowes/Rona, Crappy Tire.

Been watching Youtube
Bosnian Bill and LPL to get an idea of a good lock. But I found this BEST in my pile of stuff bin.

Since it is an all Aluminum lock, I would assume its not a good lock, but I plan to weld on a shroud and do some beads around the shackle for anti-shim (just above when its locked)

Other Options on Auckland Grainger site
This BEST lock is only locking up a bicycle, my previous U-lock from Mountain Equipment COOP (R.E.I.) lost an endcap and shows some plastic on the inside.
I got some hardened steel chain lined up from Auckland Grainger, they sell locks there too.
I was shocked to see how lame the Master Locks are, so I was looking at American Lock, but ML owns them too :(
I know if the thief wants it, they do forceful measures. Its more for peace of mind.

The American Lock 5200 is $19.84, hardened steel all around, 5/16 shackle, so 1/16th bigger then 1/4.... so not impressive, but the price is right!
1/2" start at $75
7/16 start at $40 6230 Master Lock though, so I assume they can be raked in seconds.
7/16 then jumps to $45 then to $50+.
3/8 is $35 with a shroud M.L.#7050.
3/8 shackle disc lock M.L.# 40KAD0501 $23 I could weld on that one too.

So many choices to choose from.

It's unfortunately going to be cheaper for you to buy a new lock, have you looked at Abus or Buffo's round design? The are hard to cut off, but the cheaper import designs-- not so much

If you could pick your Best lock to it's core position you could just buy a new, already keyed core

There are spool pins available, but no serrated and no shims for a Best SFIC lock.

It is considered an intermediate lock to pick. Sometimes they almost fall open, sometimes it takes months.

You can buy keyed cores off eBay for a reasonable price. Some of us can supply a keyed core as well.

A competent local locksmith should be able to remove the core, either destructively or non destructively. If you have a keyed core available for him/her, the would most likely just use destructive methods to get the core out, then install a new core.

can you post some pictures of your lock? almost all Best OEM locks are brass body and steel shackle, not aluminum.

Suspect he thinks it is aluminum by look.

Yep! That Best padlock is brass plated with nickle probably. They do have hardened steel shackles even though they are the same color as the lock body.
