Noob question regarding this lock

Postby noobLockpicker55555 » 28 Mar 2019 8:36

Hi all,

I bought this lock a few years ago and have finally decided to play around with it.

With the lock came these barrel type things and a small allen key:

I assume these barrel things are to disable individual pins but I can't figure out how to get into the lock to install them! At the back of the plug (I think it is called) there are three grooves (at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock). I am reluctant to apply too much force here without being sure as I tried and the metal piece between 3 and 6 o clock moved slightly. I am concerned it could snap off.

Can anyone help me out and confirm what the barrel things are for, and how to use them!?

Thanks very much

Apologies for the formating errors in the original post. For some reason the fforum won't let me edit it. I just get a 'your post contains too few characters' message. The same thing happens if I try to edit this post!

I notice there is what I assume is a clip at the back of the plug. Based on youtube videos, the 'barrel-type things' appear to be pins. I am still unsure what to do with them. I don't want to take the clip off without knowing what I am doing.

I fixed your pics.

those pins are anti-picking security pins commonly known as Spool Pins because they look like an empty spool of thread.

The allen 'key' fits the set screws on the top of the lock cylinder. Underneath each screw is a spring, under that is a top pin & under that is the bottom pin. Those spool drivers you got can replace the standard top pins found in your lock once you have gotten proficient at picking it open, with the standard top pins it likely now has installed

Edit - I guess the spool pins are just provided with the lock in order to provide a bit of experience with them? Thanks again, very hekpful I appreciate it. I'm looking forward to exploring this new hobby.

I would practice picking before any dissembly with the cuttaway allowing you to see pins at shear line. It's a little like cheating as you can see which pins are in place, and any overlifted, you can make a plug follower from wooden dowel, or plastic tubing. Many plugs can't be repinned by screws in back, good knowledge if you want to Rekey yours or others locks.
