Whats you opinion on online schools?

Postby ncognet0 » 27 Apr 2019 18:46

Hello, I am new to lock picking and wish to pursue this as a retirement career. I have been practicing non stop picking padlocks and door knobs. (I'm not very good yet). When I live theres not much chance to work under a locksmith as an apprentice , I have looked at Foley Belsaw/Penn Foster/Stratford. Do you experienced folks have any suggestions?

Unfortunately as a locksmith most of my work isn't picking locks--there are many other things to do,
lockpicking is almost the least of my work-- perhaps 2-4 jobs a week involve picking someone's lock

Far as schools go, Foley is out of business but you could still do their study course if you have the literature
My Dad always told me when you finish locksmith school you have enough knowledge to be dangerous. Thing is there are hundreds if not thousands of different lock manufacturers and every lock is somewhat different, as it wouldn't be assigned a patent if it were exactly the same.

I get calls every year from beginners wanting to apprentice/ work for me & I'm just no longer interested in training anyone else--too many past disappointments for me to try that again

If you have the money to burn you could go to www.lsieducation.com/

Online schools are expensive and at best would give you some very basic skills. You could probably learn more basics off the internet and You Tube.

See if there is a local/state Locksmith association and join. The networking will be much more valuable than online schools.
