Revolver issue

Postby Navin_R_Johnson » 23 Dec 2020 16:37

I travel often for work and thought a Sparrows Revolver would fit the bill for hotel duty but, not so sure after playing with it for a few days. I can feel the pins crunch their way past the machine marks in the bible and eventually just bind. If I let off enough tension to get past, what I assume is a machining mark, the rest of the pins drop. I couldn't even get pin 5 to move in the first two bibles unless all tension was let off so, I'm down to 4 pins now.

The pins look in good condition so I gave it a bit of graphite lube and worked each location with the key for a while that helped a bit. Anybody have some advise on how to free this thing up a bit more?
Should I just move on from this thing and get a few lock cores to carry? Any recommendations for cores? Paclock a reasonable choice? They are easy for me to get if I go the individual route and I can 3D print a holder/grip for them.

Thanks and Happy Holidays folks!

One of our fellow members makes the best training lock ever. That's what I've heard. He's MrWizard if I'm not mistaken... here it is

It sounds like that thing is about to DIE Navin R Johnson. Sorry, I couldn't resist, I was being a Jerk. Greatest screen name ever by the way.

I have been not particularly happy with my Revolver either. It honestly seems rather crude and clunky. I think part of that is that there is just too much going on with it. I think I would prefer a single bible unit with set screw repinning. Also, you would think that a round item would be comfortable to hand hold, but I find it very uncomfortable after a short period of time. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks for the input folks. That screen name shows both my age and sense of humor, hope nobody minds me dropping an occasional (adolescent) joke here.

Agreed, it's very uncomfortable to hold for long periods. Not just the shape, also the weight. Could maybe be used as an anchor for a small boat!
I ran into the locks from Mr.Wiz and appreciate the recommendation but, I'd like to have 4-5 different different locks/cores to swap between. Cost and size would be an issue for that many.

Does anyone have any input on the Paclock cores? The newer models seem to get good reviews on good biting and construction but I've never played with one. Also a reasonable price for a set of 5 cores (under $30 USD)
Schlage would also be a consideration. I like the screw on cap for the cylinder, no hunting for sprung c-clips when I re-pin. I'm very unfamiliar with their models though and some seem very cost prohibitive if I want a few of them.
I avoid "flea-bay" like the plague (Covid?) and would like to avoid that messy pile.

Thanks again,
The Jerk
