Yale woes please help

Postby Lockm3up » 9 Apr 2021 15:06

So I've been picking for a while I have many spooled padlocks mainly Abus and sterlings and some other random brands. I have a few other euros I can get into including a couple of era's and some unions...

Q... Why am I struggling with Yale's?? I have one rim cylinder I can get into no probs seems like an older style. But I can't seem to defeat the newer style. I bought some new picks including the ssdev kit and a peterson gem and No1 in .15 so I think I have the tools just can't seem to get in? Any tips would be welcome. Also good to note I have the key which works fine. And the bidding isn't exactly scary. From what I see they have spools in 2/3/4 or just 2/4 but I can't even feel them? Tempted to gut it just to see what what's screwing me... Any tips or advice would be welcomed guys

If you can gut it, do so. Then install the two pin stacks furthest into the lock. Get used to picking those.

Since they are the furthest into the keyway, you also have to deal with the hardest part of the warding since you have the least space to move your picks.

When you are used to picking those two pin stacks, add the next pin stack. When you are used to that, you are ready for the next. And the next. Before long, you are ready for this one:

If you want to know more about that lock, Macgyver101 did a good post on it

Thanks for the advice, I'm hesitant only because I feel I've mastered the basics and feel I should be smashing this kind of cylinder. I will gut it and work from the back as suggested, I'll share my thoughts and perhaps find that Yale secret sauce I've not exactly developed the pallet for thus far.
