What is Privilege Escalation?

I'm still knew to Lock Picking, so I've been looking around at different training material. I was looking at books on amazon and i saw "Keys to the Kingdom: Impressioning, Privilege Escalation, Bumping, and Other Key-Based Attacks Against Physical Locks" by Deviant Ollam. Obviously, this book is beyond my current level, but part of the title confused me.

My question, in simple terms, what is "Privilege Escalation" in regard to physical keys? I do Tech Support for my day job, so I'm very familiar with Privilege Escalation in regard to computer hacking. But I can't picture a way to do that with a physical key. Can someone explain please?

Privilege escalation means the same thing with physical keys as with hacking. It is actually easier with physical keys. It has to do with figuring out the master keying system, which is not really a beginner thing. Like hacking, the goal is accessing areas that you are not permitted to enter. Which is why it really should not be discussed on the open forum since it has nothing to do with hobby picking.

I will say that the book you mention is an outstanding book and does explain privilege escalation.

I wasn't even thinking of the Master Key system. So Privilege Escalation would be like turning a Single Tenant Key into a Building Master Key. Got it. Thank you.
