New to hobby Top of keyway help

Postby mikenflorida » 24 Sep 2021 17:18

I am having a hard time keeping my tension tools in the top of the key way. It keeps slipping out. When I can get it to stay it will pop out when I set a pin. Thanks

Without being able to see what you're doing, off the top of my head it sounds like the problem could be that you need a thicker TOK bar -- ideally you'd want a pretty snug fit to the keyway you're working on.

Also, there is some practice required as well.

I did buy some actual TOK tensioners from the Lockpicking Lawyer site. They seem to be the type everyone is using and I am using the tightest ones. Maybe I am not putting them in far enough because I am afraid of hitting the first pin? Is there a proper way to put pressure on them? Thanks.

Finding the right tensioner is important and sometimes difficult.

Some keyways have a slight curve at the top which makes it hard to tension in one direction. The tools doesn't lock properly and want so slide out. If the lock can be turned in both directions, try the other way around. (Often the case with door lock cylinders; but not padlocks for instance.)

If that's not possible, try different thicknesses and sizes if you have them. Sometime it's not the perfect fit that works, and you have to do with whatever works.

If you're not already, mount the lock in a small table-top vice. This might get you better control than when holding the lock in the hand.

Give up and use bottom of the keyway instead. (If at all possible of course.)

LPL puts a 90 degree bend in his, have you tried that?
Check a couple of his Videos if not. Good Luck
I have Top of keyway tools, But still use Bottom tools.
Habit? I guess some you may have to, haven't ran into them yet, maybe a couple times way back.
