Tibbe cylinder help

Postby jaguar owner » 26 Dec 2004 23:42

:( When switching cylinders on my 91 jag so I could change door handles, I had a slight accident: the little wafers cascaded out onto the floor.

I managed to find them all, but assembling them in the right order is the main task.

I managed to figure out that there are just 3 cuts on the Tibbe keys, and they must correspond with the offset on the center key shaft, but where do I proceed from there?

I do have some markings on the wafers, but instead of 1,2,& 3, there are no, 1, & 2 notches.

Thanks.

I would suggest just using process of elimination, put one in the first one, if it doesn't work try another one and so on down the line. You don't have to have all of the wafers in the lock at one time for it to turn.

Are there any numbers on the cylinder at all?

Yes, sort of:

One notch, two nothces, and no notches. It doesn't match the 1-2-3 very well.

The simple solution is to remove another cylinder and disassemble it in a controlled way so you can see the order of the disks. If you have the lock apart you can see how it operates with the bar that locates into the deeper notch so its just a case of rearranging the disk to the key.Place the key in the barrel with out the disks inserted and look at the cuts of the key that way and it should become clear which cuts move which disks a long way or a short way. Try one disk at a time to see how far they move in relation to the end cut of the key as a guide and you will soon work out this little puzzle.

Nah dont take another one out just figure it out.

The older Jag cyls. have 8 spaces and 3 angles (cuts/depths).

The tumblers have lines on them like you said, I is a 1. II is a 2, plain or no lines is a 3 cut.

The later model jags are different.

Should be easy now. Good luck. :D

Got it!

:D Deciphering which notch was it was the breakthrough. Lock works fine now, and the next step may be cutting my own spare key (new ones cost $35).

Thanks to you guys, and especially picksmith!
