When pinning a Best IC core the bottom pin and top pins should add up to I think 23 (adding the number together for each size pin in the barrel). Does anyone know if this number (23) is correct?
Your lock probably does add up to 23 but it depends which system you are using. Tell us that and we can tell you for sure. (ex. A2, A4, pre system 70, Z, ETC.)
If that question didn't make any sense to you, you could measure the pins with a caliper and figure out that it was pinned with one of the systems found on this page:
23 is the magic number in an A2 system (most common). But you also have the "control" pin, and if the cylinder is mastered, another pin.
There is generally (generally mind you) 4 pins in each stack of a master keyed icore, some folks only do 1 or 2 chambers, but more commonly all 5-7.

Thanks for all the information, I am sure it was a A2 system. I did pin 4 pins per stack and it was a master key system. I was the locksmith at a company from 1992 till 1998. I am interveiwing for another locksmith position ( which uses the Best System) and just trying to refresh my memory. Any general information about the Best System would greatly be appreciated. Best did provide the codes and I used their software to figure out the cuts for the key, but I forgot the formula to figure out on paper the math for the codes and cuts. Adding control key#,grand master key#,etc. then subtracting #??????????
