A NOT SO EASY KWIKSET

Yo, well this guy i know told me if i could pick this silver kwikset dead bolt of his i could have it for practise, since i've worn out the brass ones i use to practice well this one took me 15 mins to pick, my question is, are there tougher kwikset locks out there than just the ones u usually hear ppl say they pick

I can't say for sure, but I can tell you that I've never run into any with security features, or even any that were more quality. I seem to recall that they have three product lines, but I'm not _positive_.

Might've just been keyed fairly well?

The new kwikset keying manual says that it would be okay to place spool top pins in ONLY the first three chambers of the lock, so you may eventually run into one with spool pins. They do indeed have 3 product lines now a days, but they are something like security, max security and ultramax security or something. For their highest grade now, they are claiming that the bolt on the deadbolt meets ANSI grade 1 specs. Looks like Kwikset may one day put out a respectable product.

I've got an UltraMax Interchangable Core lock that I've been having a heck of a time picking.

Thus far I've successfully picked numerous Master and off-brand padlocks, numerous regular Kwikset locks, a few Schlage locks, and even a couple of differant UltraMax's. However this specific one is just kicking my ass.

Like all UltraMax locks I've encountered, it's got 6 standard pins (no spools, mushrooms or threaded). The problem seems to be with it's high-low configuration. Pin 1 is high, 2 is low, 3 is high, 4 is low, 5 is between low and medium, and 6 is between medium and high.

Driving me nuts. I am also having a hard time feeling the pins break on this one. Oh well, guess I just need more practice. I suppose the difficulty I'm having will ultimatly pay off.

I find you can make a kwikset infinitely more difficult by repinning in a high-low fashion.

I'm in commercial so I'm not too familiar with the finer details of Kwikset - what's the Ultramax Interchangeable Core - particular the Interchangeable part.

Is that a Kwickset brand core or is it SFIC?

I am very new to this subject, so please forgive me for any inaccuracies.

The Kwikset UltraMax is the product formerly known as the Titan (for reference the Maximum Security is formerly known as the Kwikset Plus and the Security is formerly just known as the Kwikset).

The UltraMax (and presumably the Titan) is “higher-security” due to its 6-pin configuration. From what I have read (and seen in my limited experience) most of the UltraMax locks are not interchangeable cores. However, I have one installed in my home that is an interchangeable core, and my employer (a new home builder) uses these locks exclusively. These cores are Kwikset branded, and appear to only fit other Kwikset UltraMax Interchangeable Core locks.

Although I am not very familiar with SFIC, I am presuming you are referring to the Best SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core) Mortise Lock Cylinder. From what I can tell these two IC locks are not very alike (other than the IC part).

I presume Kwikset is stepping up its efforts to manufacture a quality and useful product, as someone from their company probably stumbled across this site….

i have a ultramax lock...likes streching my patience and the macs..its good fun to pick and has spools in the first 2 pin stacks..my peterson replica (reach) works the best on it

I have a Titan on my front door and I've not been able to pick it yet. It does have a high-low configuration, but since I have the keys I feel I have an advantage for picking it, but to no avail, yet. I have not been doing this for long, but have been able to pick every other lock I've tried. 7 and 6 pins at work, Master locks, and even the door from the garage to the interior of my house (same key). Maybe I just feel odd standing on the porch leaning against the door for more than 5 minutes at a time.

i bought 4 kwikset Titan dead bolts (cost me a 5.99 for all 4.....they were on a clearance sale ) ...... those were my initial practice locks. I had 1 set to 1pin, 1 set to 3pin, 1to 5 pin and 1 to 6pin. I can pick the 6pin very easily - it was just a matter of practice. I wouldn't exactly call Titan a very secure lock, given that I can even pick it with just a paper clip, lol.
