lost spring? what can i use to replace it?

I was thinking a mechanical pencil spring? maybe cutting it so it isnt so strong?

I'll continue the look but this is my first lock, plus i'm still working on 3 pins so i should have a few days before i master 4

You can get replacement springs from any locksmith (if they will sell them). Or you can do what I do, safe every lock that you take apart (or screw up). Even "dead" locks can yield a spring or two, and certainly a dissection is always a good learning exercise.
