To be honest, I don't really know why it's so special. But since I have no other use for my long hook, why not?

Doh, sorry for the double post, zoned out and clicked submit. That pick is a deforest diamond pick, not the Peterson gem. The Peterson gem is this: Image. They also make a slender version, which is just thinner.

After all the research... I think it would be better and cheaper to go with the 14 piece set:

Does that sound like a wise option?

You know, you can over-research this.

The MPXS-14 is a fine starter set. The metal handles are good. You will perhaps get more picks and fewer tension tools than you might wish for, but this is fine because tension tools are much easier to make than picks and you can add to the set by making your own.

Truthfully, you will do better by buying a set such as this and practicing with it, than by spending too much time worrying about what to get.

After you use it for a while, you will be much better informed about any future additions you might want to make.

Well said B, well said. I was thinking more like "Just buy the freakin' things and get on to the picking for cryin' out loud!" but you answer has more class. :P

Half the fun in buying something new, shiny, and that you've wanted for a long time is to research it for a while. I spent a good chunk of time this week searching the forums and comparing sites just trying to figure out where and what to buy. There are so many differing opinions out there that eventually I just picked the shiniest. Well, I was swayed somewhat. For instance, I was turned off the idea of an electric pick because people made it sound like the electric picks do all the work for you, and that's no fun!
In short, you're over-analyzing the whole thing. But it's certainly a lot of fun to do, isn't it?

The gem shape is my favorite. It's strong, it's accurate(targeting one pin is no problem), and it's got great feedback. I'm sure there are more highlights but those are the ones that come to mind. No complaints though, this shape has no downside in my eyes.

And don't forget to get a Johnson pick. I can't live without my Johnson pick.

There should be a "sarcasm" font. What do you all think? I could use that a heck of a lot more than italics. I can see it now... bold, underline, italics, sarcasm. I think I'm on to something here. Geeks, make it so. :)
