Hi, my question is this. I just bought a 2 drawer safe from a military auction at the DRMO.....the problem is, it's missing the combination. I can take it to a locksmith and they can put a auto-dialer on it. I would love to crack it myself...my expertise does lie in multi tumbler and tubular locks... safes we just drilled and explored with a scope.....then freeze with gas and dispose. Any help in this area appreciated. The cost of the auto-dialer fee is $100 if it works and they supply the combination.... Thanks

If they are only going to charge $100 for a damage-free opening, you should go with it. That is very cheap. While there are resources on the internet to teach you the basics of safe cracking, it still takes many years to master the art. The chances of you reading on it a little then being able to open your safe is virtually 0. There are just so many variables that you don't know. Take that locksmith up on his offer, it's worth it.

Well thats a first, usually people are asking me for something of more of a explosive nature....so, what is your offer....and shipping would be a real treat....it's about 3 feet tall X 2 feet wide X 3 feet deep. It weighs in around 450 Lbs...... so what, ups??

Old US Army safes, were used in mess halls to store records and cash/checks, and a few other places, all have a limited number of combinations and these were available to certain intelligence types who may have been involved in investigations where the money tempted some mess sargent. I would troll the internet looking for the list of try out combinations. Don't drill it, drilling will work, but you are not faced with the necessity of getting in, treat it as a puzzle and an opportunity that will reward patience. (our antique strongbox guy, davhamilton, seemed to lack patience and now he has no mystery and just some scrap iron to dispose of) The lock would probably be an easy type to manipulate, try to contact jeff sitar in new jersey for advise, I don't know if he will, but worth a try, and read matt blazes paper where he covers combination locks. most of all, have patience, persistance and if there is nothing in the box, when you finally open it non destructively, even if it takes a year or two, you will get a real ego boost knowing that you did it with intelligence, not brute force.

and by puzzling it out, you will have learned a lot. drilling will cheat you of that. When you finally manipulate it, and feel the ego boost, you will probably want to get another one to keep on going. And you could sell that one to someone on lp101 as a starter kit.
