Hey, I would have searched first but I didn't know how to word my question in the search engine. Anyway, I thought about ordering lockpicks from SouthOrd. I know that you don't have to send them a copy of your locksmithing certification or anything as such. Would they check your background to see if you are certified to buy lockpicks? On their website it says, "By placing an order for locksmithing tools, the buyer asserts to be, without fraud or deception, a bonafied member of the locksmithing industry, or other qualified personnel." Because of this, I've been affraid to buy a set from companies that say this. I'd hate to have a cop come to my door because I bought a "piece of metal" from the internet. Well anyways, thanks guys and keep up the good work everybody has done on this site.

Practically speaking, they're just covering their rears. Legally, yes, you're probably being slightly naughty; in reality I'd bet the farm that nobody has ever been brought up on charges related to this and never will be, at least in connection to an order of picks from SouthOrd for a hobby
As in all things, it's your call, but the chances of trouble are exceedingly slim. You can eliminate even those by checking your state legislation for the exact local legalities; if it's legal to have such things without being a locksmith, the only thing you could possibly be breaking is a contract agreement with SO, and that only exists so they can point the finger at you when the cops come after them -- which they won't, because you haven't broken any laws. Get it?

As mentioned earlier, http://www.lockpickshop.com is a sponsor of this site and offers a 10% discount. They require nothing of you but payment will ship your order very quickly. They carry the SouthOrd line as well.
To receive the discount, enter LP101 in the coupon box during checkout. Note that discounts only apply to regularly priced items.
Cheers,
db

Thanks guys for your help. I have no intentions of a life of crime, just picking as a hobby. Acutally I'm a and guy, no evilness in my blood. I have already bought a 5 piece set from www.budk.com. They deal in knives and swords but have a few pick sets. They didn't mention any restrictions so I went for it. I paid $20 plus a free book. I know, a little pricey but at the time I was skepticle about places that kind of wording in the fine print.

I would actually feel more comfortable ordering from a site that had this language. Reasoning: the only way authorities woudl get access to your information would be if they got access to the records of the website. The more the website stays on the right side of the law, the less likely the goverment could convince a court that they should be allowed access.
For example, there are some websites on which anyone can order spores and growing equipement for illegal psychadelic mushrooms (the spores themselves are not illegal, although they can only be used for scientific purposes). I'm not interested in the drugs, but I am interested in the law--you have to sign this massive disclosure that you will use the supplies for legal purposes before ordering. And, as far as I know, these sites have been successful in keeping their orders confidential from the police.
So: order away!

Calling people names is not polite. It's okay to make stupid remarks and have fun once in a while. No need to call people dorks.

I have the formula for Google PageRank taped to the side of my monitor, Codeman, and the book currently sitting on my desk is the hardcover Chicago Manual of Style.
