How can I get the pins into place by hearing and feeling?

Postby iamthird » 5 Apr 2005 18:28

Hello Lock Picking group. I see that it is actually an alive forum with many active members so I joined.

My question is already stated as the subject, but I'll go into more detail here:

After reading http://home.howstuffworks.com/lock-picking6.htm I decided to make my own pick out of a paper clip and tension wretch.

I don't understand how the top pins stay up after you turn the thing with the tension wretch.

This leads to my second question--Do you always have to start from back to front? I tried to put the front pin up and it was successful because my eyes could see it stay up, but then it always drops back down after I start to work on the second pin no matter how hard I turn the tension wretch.

Please help.

Third question: how big should the pick's semi-circle head be? Please go to the website I had above to see what I'm talking about.

Okay I think that's it. I'm all new into lock-picking but I don't think I'll give it up until I succeed, hopefully. I will not be with a computer until Saturday evening (yes! Field trip!! Yay!!!), so don't be surprised if I don't respond to your answers for the next few days.

The diagrams on that site (at least the one flash video that shows the actual picking) are not reliable. Go to some sites which sell lockpicks and look at the pictures of real picks. Real picks do not have any semi-circle like they show in the flash video. As for where to start, front or back, that can be quickly answered in the FAQ or by searching.

You would do well to read the MIT Guide to Lockpicking. A link to it can be found in the FAQ section.

By reading your post, its obvious you are still not understanding the mechanics of a lock. Read the MIT guide a few times, and if you have the means buy a cheap deadbolt to take apart and study.

I know everyone recomends the MIT guide, but you might as well read this one as well.
