Hi,

My new g/f is learning to pick locks after seeing me do a few, she came to my house the other night with a few padlocks that she found at her house and proceeded to spend most of the night trying to pick them.
Now some of them she was successful with...how ever two refused to yeild..so she gave them to me and I couldnt get them open either (we tried the keys and they worked fine it) so I gathered they must have some kinda spool pin in...was wondering if anyone could confirm or give info on the following two padlocks?

Yale (has the code CEE1 written on the bottom no other markings)
Abus no.55/50

Abus is pretty high in security, good luck starting out with it. Its like really hard. German made, so what do you expect. Yale, definatally has a spool pin in there, most likely two. Those are more advanced locks, and you should practice on the Yale if you are ready, before you go onto Abus.

You should tell your girlfriend that you're a failure in life and promptly commit ritualistic suicide.

Yeah, rayman's right, Abus locks often have security pins in them. Yales, I'm not sure about, as I don't see too many of them, but I doubt they'd come standard with security pins.

I wasn't joking about the first part.

ABUS?? hard?? well ok, the first lock i ever picked was an ABUS 55 83 with 2 mushroom pins in it, fluke though.

but i spose they can be hard if pinned right, but unless they do have mushoom/spool pins in them, put as much tention as you want, its the only lock iv found easyer to pick with really hard tention.

They are also really satisfing to pick, have fun.
If it doesn't seem to make sence, take a minuite to look at who said it... do you still want to know?

I was once a fly on the wall for the pinning of ~50 Abus padlocks. The spool pin placement is random, while Yales seem to have a fair bit of a preference for the 2/4 arrangement.

Discus

For abus discus, I have never destroyed one to see what the pins are, but I believe there may be spools in there, usually something like an yale 6 or 12 keyway, small plug, I make a type of bogota that has the points downward from the handle position, and with this and a diamond I have never had much trouble getting them open. There is also a specially adapted torkylever that gives better clearance for shrouded hasp areas. Abus responds to light raking with a properly sanded rake. Or it can be picked with pretty much the same light tension.
