safe info needed

Postby lock45 » 8 Apr 2005 18:01

hello

i don't know if this falls under lock-picking; if it doesn't please delete. thanks.

anyways, i need some simple info on opening a safe. i have the combination, but i can't get it open. is there some trick to it? it is a sears model #61601 from 1967
any simple info would do -- such as what mark do i start it on/ do i need to start the safe on number 'zero' / will my local locksmith be able to open it? any info would be much appreciated.

thanks!

Try adding and subtracting 1 or 2 from each number. If your sure your dialing it correctly and have the combo right, and your still having problems, you should call up your local locksmith. Even if he is not a trained safe technician he should be able to point you to someone who is. Your probobly not going to get a whole lot of info about safe topics in this open forum.

When I say add or subtract a number or two, I mean this:
Lets say the combo you think it is is 20-40-70. Try:
21-40-70
19-40-70
20-41-70
20-39-70
20-40-71
20-40-69
22-40-70
18-40-70
20-42-70
20-38-70
20-40-72
20-40-68

Best of luck.

lock45,

I am not familar with your model.

Is this a fire safe with a seperate handle?

If so... generally:

You'd dial the combination as turning the dial twice past the first number to the right and stopping on it the third time it comes around.

Then turn left passing the second number once, stopping on the second number as it comes around again.

Then... turn the dial right again stopping on the number the first time it comes around.

Some safes do not have a seperate handle... these are opened when the dial is turned to the right after the last number is dialed.

In these cases... it is left (passing three times) to the first number, then right (passing twice) the second number, then left again passing the third number once and stopping on it as it comes around again. Then... turn the dial right one turn and it should 'catch' the bolts and open.

There are various other variations...

I understand Sears does a decent job of keeping old owners manuals for old products... consider contacting them... 40 years is a long time, but you never know.
