i mwas told the other day that it is impossible to impression a steel key...as yet i'm not sure how , but i have also been promised a lesson in it. so when ive seen how it is done i'll let every one know how it works... unless there are some who alredy know ... i'm going to this persons home in two weeks so until then it's BRASS for me

Well, if the steel is hard and the pins are softer, the pins may have more chance of making marks (like soft chalk on a hard blackboard). Also, a steel key can be turned harder with less chance of breaking.
It was my impression (har, har) that the marks made when impressioning are dents or scratches in the metal of the blank, not "rubbings" of the metal from the pins.
that would only be if the pins were harder or of the same strength. if it was a steel key the pins would be softer and leave a small mark like chalk. where you see a mark you file.. you must remember that a steel key is much stronger than a brass one so you can exert more pressure on the key... by the way this is all theory because as yet i havent learnt with a steel key... but i can see the point clearly...
