Hi, I'm quite new to this all, and quite taken with the idea of learning this hobby. That being said, I will also say that I just bought a 7-piece set of Peterson picks with rubber handles (are those any good? please let me know!), but I totally forgot to to buy a tension tool! instead of placing a new order, I was wondering how plausible it was to use a paper clip as a tension wrench? If not a paper clip, anything else I might find around my dorm room? I'm in college with barely any money. Used it all on the pick set. thanks for your guy's time.

read the MIT guide, the FAQ's and watch the animations on howstufworks about lockpicking, that should give you a fair bit of information as well as searching the site.

there are loads of things you can ake tension wrenches from, search for home made picks, it should turn up loads of stuff for you. things like the metal parts in car wiper blades and hacksaw blades tend to be the most common, but as for things around your dorm room, it depends what you want to pick, you can get a womans hair grip and snap off the wiggly bit leaving an L shaped piece of metal, but they only work on small padlocks. you could try using the metal shirt-clip part on a pen, i think Parker pens work well for this if i remember right (they're the ones with the arrow shaped clip just in case you're not sure ;)). just have a look round for anything about 2-5mm wide made of thin metal and see what you can make from it. you'll be amazed what you can do!

welcome to the forum by the way, i hope you like it here, good luck with you're picking! :D
