stiff wafers

I'm working on picking a wafer tumbler, however, the wafers are so stiff that I can't push them up. Any ideas on how to loosen them up??

Can you push them up with no tension at all? Or are they only stif once you apply tension?

Lube it, I guess. Flood the lock with a good artificial lube (Teflon or silicon bases are good); WD-40 will do if you have nothing else, though it's not ideal (the residue can collect grime and eventually clog up the lock. doesn't matter in the short term.).

Oh, powdered graphite will work fine, though it's a little messy. If you haven't got any, try grinding the tip of a pencil.

if its an old lock and thats why the wafers are sticking after you lube it, give it a good hour or so work work in then try using something to move the wafers, i wouldn't use your picks, you dont want to break them, try finding something that fits easily in the lock but is a bit stronger, a small screwdriver perhaps? if you have the key to the lock or one thats a similar shape, try putting that into the lock as well, it will help push up the wafers.
