key stuck in lock

Postby linty » 19 Jul 2005 12:09

Hey
I was trying to practice impressioning with a mortise cylinder and a blank, and i guess the cuts on my blank were too sharp because the key went in and now it won't come out. any advice on how i can pull the stuck key out of the lock?

You need to take a little off the sides of a new mortice blank as well in most cases or else they get stuck like yours

You will have to take the cover off and take the blank out, you did use a practice lock and not one in use didnt you?

If youve done the deed and its on a door in use  you will have to start trying to turn it back with a wire if non bs and if bs you probably are going to have to cut the blank off flush with the curtain and then take the lock out of the door,

If you have done it on a locked door, well just hope you havent  ask if so and we will have to continue instructing you after weve stopped laughing (no offence meant).

haha no it's nothing as serious as that, the lock i'm praciticing on is just sitting in a vice.

i just managed to get it out by removing the retainer plate and then shimming a few of the back pins and then pulling reaaaal hard. of course the springs, and pins flew everywhere but i think i learned my lesson.

thanks! :)

Next time you could probably just take off the chamber cap and remove the pins and springs that way. That's if you can get to the chamber cap.

Some things may be pick proof, but everything can be bypassed....
