Hey havent been here since last july apparently...tisk tisk i know.

anyway i'm in the UK and i bought picks (i think) from the US. I've tried to pick a couple of locks here and have found that my picks are too wide for the hole (whats the technical term?) So what i want to know is what can i do about it? Should i file them down, or buy a new set, they were only the equilivant of £5 or something like that, a basic set, 3 picks and the tension thingy. Apologies for lack of terminology but i'm sure you can advise me!

TIA

Alex

Your terminology is fine, but the general term for thinner picks is slimline. Your best bet is to order a new slimline set, but filing is always a choice, and much cheaper.

Slim picks

If posable try to get hold of the HPC 2000 series picks as they are made from stainless that is thinner that standard picks but no compromise on the strength of the tools

I say file/dremel them down and modify as needed. Then you'll know what works and what you prefer before making yet another purchase.

slim picks

Postby mupet » 16 May 2005 20:43

only trouble with filing or grinding them down is 1. the loss of strength in the blade 2. the concistency of the thickness of the blade

Mupet, believe it or not, but HPC 2000 picks are a bit hard to get ahold of. Especially for hobbyists.

thanks guys,

at the minute i'm just an interested hobbyist who has yet to successfully pick a lock, since i've only got that one set. How would you recommend i begin to file them down, any good techniques out there?

i've got both the South Ord standard set and the South Ord slim line set, to be honest there isnt a massive amount of difference between the two sets, i'll scan them together for you if you want me to at full size so you can turn them into templates to print out for filing or just so that you can see the size difference.

i happily used my standard set until someone was generous enough to give me a 5 piece slimline set, now i use that more, although the difference is small it does seem to be noticeable.

well done on picking the locks by the way! i've never heard of a sheen but if you opened it, its still a victory, well done! i've heard tricircle padlocks are cheap chinese things that are made poorly and so hard to pick. how did you find it?

it sounds like you're mainly picking padlocks, you might want to try getting yourself a door lock or 2, that way you can get some with security pins and mix the pins around, take some out, add some in, it all helps with the learning process.

hope this helps!

p.s. if this post seems a bit vauge, its because i've spent the last 4 days trying to get my old pc to run again and i've just been dancing round the room, i've finally got the windows installer working! :D woo hoo!!!

sorry.....

anyway, good luck with the picking! if you want the picks scanned, just say the word ;)

well put it this way, stick one of the southord rakes into it, give it a pull about 5 or 6 times, twist the tension, and bob's your uncle. Well done on the PC by the way, i'm into PC's big time, mostly webdesign, so if you need you done, just give me a howler too.
