Ok so my dad was hiding his keys for the gun safe and now he can't find them :-x. The lock is a tumbular lock. What should I do? My dad doesn't think calling a locksmith is worth it since it would be expensive. We dont' have a spare key because it's with the one that has been misplaced. What can I do? Is it possible to open it without harming the lock? I know I can open the safe because its not an actual safe like for a bank. It's a locker basically.

Thanks for the help.

I'm not entirelly sure that a gun-rack lock is a good lock for learning... I think that your father should really give calling a locksmith one more thought.

...and besides - i've looked through all your posts, and I'm not totally convinced that it's your father who wants this lock to be opened. If there's even a chance that you are trying to do it behind his back...well... try to look at it from our perspective... Helping an underaged person to get his hands on weapons with live ammo is not really the smartest/safest thing to do.

I'm not saying that this is the case. I'm just saying that we can't really be sure.

As i wrote before - i believe that a professionall locksmith should give it a go. And besides - if I was a father of a son, I would really feel uncomfortable knowing that my young son knows how to open my gun-rack. That lock is there for a good reason...

I hope i'm not being too harsh. :)
Anyway, good luck.

It's my gun, but I understand.

if they are your guns inside i would think that if u can prove they are yours and have proper id and firearms lience. call the locksmith. if they are not yours and with the before mentioned, also depending where u are, u might be comitting a crime and your dad might be liable for your actions.

O.k, its like this. My dad got a pelletgun and had to have a gun license to teach me how to target shoot properly. That was a year and a half a ago. I moved up and now I'm interested in target shooting with rifles. I paid for a WWII gun because I love history. (Aside from the short story). The gun locker was so when I get more experienced with guns and would like to try some more I could keep it all in one place (our house is small). Anyway, there is 1 gun in there and my dad does not want to pay the money for a lock smith to open it. I just found out that it is not a tubular lock.

I basically have two options. Tell my dad that we have no other option and just break the door off (lol). The safes value is $100.

Get a gun smith down here and pay a lot just to get one gun out. Eventually paying more than the gun safe in lock smith money.

Or, I could try and pick it just for the hell of it and see what happens.

Honestly, I would have more fun breaking it haha, but it would be nice if my dad and I could get a copy for the safe. I was thinking that it would be impossible since anyone who really wanted to get in could call up the company and read off the safe serial number and get a spare key?

So there you have it.

If it's not a tubular lock, then it's almost definately a pin tumbler or wafer, in which case the MIT guide should cover it no trouble. There's a decent chance it's a double-bitted wafer (I see these a lot on cheap lock boxes), in which case there's some special picks for them:

Well... you could try to impression the lock. I would guess it is the most reasonable way - much easier than picking the lock every time you want to open or lock the case.
If you could post a pic of the keyway, it might give some more insight into the problem.
100$ is not a lot for a safe that size so i guess the lock is not high-security, and probably it shouldn't create too much of a problem... But on the other hand i don't know a lot about safes, and it wouldn't be a surprise for me if this thread was moved into the advanced forums. :)

I don't think I can get much closer than that. The light reflects off the metal of the case. I was about to buy a few tension wrenches and a Double Sided Disc Tumber Lock Picks. I'll wait for a few more replies before I go off and do that.

Yes... my bad. Sorry. I was hestitating too long before i posted, and i didn't see that you posted the pic even before i asked for it.
Wafer locks are relatively easy to pick, and i don't think there is much to say about them that has not been already said on this forum.

Well, I just did a search on the forum. This means I'll buy a basic picking kit and get a heavy tension wrench.

a) Fill out your profile so we know where you are from. Advice given to someone in Canada or the UK about guns and gun safes would be different than what I'd give someone here in Virginia USA. (Where we issue guns to all visitors at the state line! :) )

b) It's none of my business really... but why the heck are you locking up your guns. Are the criminals in your area polite enough to give you a 'timeout' while you fumble with a gun safe?

If you got kids in the home... Obviously!! Lock it up. But if YOU are the son and it's your gun... then maybe the gun safe was a bad idea to begin with.

Again... your locality may REQUIRE you to 'lock up your self defense'. But we can't tell that from an empty profile.

...just a thought!

We don't lock up 1 gun to be safe. It's just so they are in one place because I don't have enough room for more (when I get more) in my room. The only one I keep in my room usually would be my WWII German rifle (collection piece).
