Does any one know how to open my dial combination master lock? I do not want to buy the shims, so is there a way that i can pick the keyhole on the back of the lock?
Thanks

It's a pin tumbler... the MIT guide, located in the FAQ section will be your best bet.
The lock he's on about is for a spin-dial combo lock, the same kind of dial they have on safes.
That tool CPLP mentioned is for combo locks with 3 or more wheels - not much use I'm afraid.
I'd suggest searching for info on how to make shims, but I get the impression you'd be too incompetant to even manage it.

I didn't have shims either when i started with dial combo locks. I got a bobby pin and filed it down so it was thin. you take that and jam it in the inside part of the shackle on the side that comes open when you normally open it and it should pop open.

To answer the original poster’s question, yes, like any other lock, the keyway on the back can be picked. It is just an ordinary 4 pin lock, and I’m pretty sure it does not have any security pins. The only challenge it presents is that it is a very small keyway, and torqing it without the wrench getting in the way can be a bit tricky. It must be torqued clockwise, and it may be easiest to place the wrench in the keyway just above the pins.

CPLP, the model lock the poster is referring to cannot be opened with the mini knife tool.

My mistake, thought he was talking about the other combination locks. The round ones with key hole are different. Never actually touched any but they don't seem hard to pick.

On "padlock style locks" is this back keyhole always for a "master" key, or is it sometimes for "resetting" the combination? I have seen this design on both padlocks, lockers, other examples, etc. I have always wondered if this is "always" for a master key or if this wasn't some sort of combination reset.

If it looks like a keyway, it's a master key override. If it's just a hole, it's a combination reset opening.
Some things may be pick proof, but everything can be bypassed....

Cool... thank you for clarifying.

Is it possible to open the master combination lock using a snake pick on the back keyhole of?? If that keyhole is for a master key, it should open the lock as well as any other locks of the same keyhole right??

If the lock is a part of a master system, then yes, all other locks in that system will open in the same way. But locks can differ from lock to lock, even with the same pinning.

This type of master lock is what I had to buy when i was in high school, the principal was rumored to have the key to the keyway on the back and used it if they needed to do locker searches. Not sure if they are allowed to do this still, I liked this lock - and am still looking for one. I have only seen then at my highschool though - I can not seem to locate them anywhere - I have tried Canadian Tire, Home Hareware as well as Zellers, Sears and Wallmart.

I had them in my high school as well. It wasn't a rumor, we KNEW the administration had the key for the back. Although, we had to buy them through the school and surrender our combo when we bought them as well, so I don't know what the point of both was.
I've picked that back keyhole a few times but I find it extremely difficult to manage both tension and a pick in such a small area.
