Other people who have talked about their success stories buying online.

Varjeal: Companies that sell locksmithing tools, and lockpick tools in particular, are required by law to keep records of whom/when/where tools they sell go to. This means that if you have purchased tools in Canada legally...they have been "registered".

If you are having trouble making picks let us know what the problem is and perhaps one of us can help you out. There is a great video by pyro in the FAQ under the video thread is a link to it.

The answer to your query is no. There is no method of legally getting picks into Canada without being a locksmith, etc. etc.

Like you, I too am new and am in the same situation. I'm going to take a chance and order a 14 piece pick set (MPXS-14) tonight and see if it gets across the border. I'll have my fingers crossed the whole time. I'll let you know how I make out. If it gets impounded at customs I'll be forced to make my own set and then I'll have to pick my way into customs and retrieve "My Precioussssss"!!!

UnLock and Sipe, If you do place your order on-line try to get it shipped under a companies name, that helps it go through sometimes, specially if it is related to locksmithing or a towing company

I have to be the stick in the mud here and say it is not cool even to joke about doing something illegal. Read rule #8.

marso,

I see my mistake in joking about the Customs thing. I have absolutely NO intention of doing any type of illegal activity at all. I apologize if this wasn't too kosher of a remark to make but I was just having a bit of fun. Thanks for the pointing out the rules and keeping me on the straight and narrow!

Asher,

Thanks for the tip. I do have a registered small business however it has absolutely nothing to do with this. I will however include my business name when ordering.

Order from lockpicks.com.

They sent my order, it got here in a fairly decent amount of time, the prices were reasonable, and they wrote "Tool Kit" and "Fragile" on the package.

It came in untouched. :)

Hey Nose_Picker,

I ordered my set last night from Lockpickshop and they also write "Tool Kit" on the parcel and "L.P.S." is written for the return address label. Hopefully it'll come through no problem. I ended up ordering the MPXS-14
Kit as well as 3 other seperate tension picks.

If all goes well, I think I might purchase the 7/8 pin SouthOrd tubular lock picks. I need to do a lot more reading on the use of these. I'm still not sure how easy they are to use and at what experience level one should consider using them. If I do end up buying them, I'll order from LockPicks as they are cheaper priced.

Thank you for updating me on LockPicks shipping method...much appreciated.

Hey Sipe,

I've been doing a tonne of reading when I found a post regarding the Canadian Law on lock picking tools. A member by the name of TristOr wrote the following:

Trist0r wrote:
GoodSpeed wrote:to have them. Trist0r I'm wondering what would happen if I ordered and got the letter from the RCMP and wasn't able to prove my ability to have the picks? Are they just going to destroy/keep them or will I be looking at some serious trouble? I don't mind losing the money but I really don't want any trouble.

I live in Alberta and I read also here someone posted the snippet about being certified by the governor general or else you can face no more than two years prison.

Basically I just want to know if I will lose anything other than my 35$ if I happen to be unlucky and get hounded.

Thanks guys.

During the conversations I had with the RCMP officer who handled my particular case he indicated that it is rare for anyone to respond to a letter such as the one I received and that if there is no response the items are destroyed. If a person does respond they provide sufficient information to satisfy the release of the item(s).

The sections of the Criminal Code of Canada you can refer to are (http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/C-46/text.html) s.351, s.352 and s.353. In any of those three sections it is the actual "possession" of instruments listed in those sections that would apply in your case. Items held by Customs and/or the RCMP are not in your possession and so are of no criminal concern to you.

FYI: As to Alberta, I saw mention of the requirement or a pick license at tradesecrets.org under the section for locksmiths. It refers to Section 353 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

I've already ordered my kit so hopefully I won't be getting a letter from them. I'll keep my picks...err I mean fingers crossed!

Hope this helps and TristOr, if you read this, I'd like to say thanks for bringing this up. Good work.

Getting picks in Canada

Postby pluck » 16 Feb 2004 19:14

Interestingly enough, not all provinces have provsions for licensing locksmiths . Alberta and BC definitely have the requirement.

The Alberta Solicitor General's Department issues licensing for their province. BC's MINISTRY OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL issues licenses in BC.

Ontario had a bill before the provincial legislature to license locksmiths but it never was passed.

Many of you may be in a no license province.

There is no license available for Ontario locksmiths to apply for. Same in some other provinces. Nor is any federal agency is empowered to license locksmiths as it is a provincal matter.

Hmmm does that mean that the 1000's of locksmiths in Ontario and other non licensed provinces are operating illegally?

Of course not .. they just have to prove they are in the locksmith business.

I can't tell you how to prove that, but consider the following example.

Joe Blow wants to be a locksmith in Ontario ... First he registers his business with the Companies Branch ... Blows Locksmithing or maybe he incorporates and becomes Blows Locksmithing Ltd.

Blows Locksmithing then gets a Provincal Sales Tax Permit and a G.S.T. number. (FYI the PST certificate looks like a very offical government document ).

Mr Blow then prints up letterhead and business cards.

What legal status won't Blows Locksmithing have ?

There is no license to apply for, nor a professional college or board that you have to join and no provincial regulation of locksmiths.
