How to pick deadbolts.

Gidday guys and gals..

I have recently tried picking a very annoying lock.. When I pick it, it rotates and then stopes half way, and when I pick it again in the half way position, it continues to rotate and stops again, leaving the lock, locked. I have triend picking it again and again but the lock stays lock. Can anyone please advice. All help greatly appreciated.

Does it function properly when you use the key ? When you say the lock stays locked, I'm guessing it's on a door and you mean the bolt stays extended ?

If so then the connection between the lock and the bolt sounds to be damaged. Depending on the lock this might be a simple flat piece of metal about the size of a screwdriver blade that works the mechanism to retract the bolt. The piece could be bent or might have slipped out of the mechanism.

Please tell me this is not a door to your house that you rely on. Pictures would help.

When it stops at 180 does it get stuck? This would mean the pins are falling into the keyway. It's a common problem for new pickers to encounter. Normally it happens when they are picking a lock that is in use and they should not be picking it. The lock can be damaged and rendered useless. Please tell us more about this lock, like is it in a door? and why you are trying to pick it?

Once it's picked to 180, and you pick it again, does it spin another 180, or about 20 degrees. My experience is somewhat limited, but I don't know of any lock that rotates 360 degrees in the locking direction when it is locked unless it's broken or throwing a bolt further into the door frame. My guess is you are simply picking the lock in the wrong direction. Deadbolts rotate in the direction that retracts the bolt. Left side mounted, clockwise, right side CCW. Knobs are different. It would help to know the brand, type, or what is it used to lock up if it were in use. Picture's are invaluable. As already mentioned, don't practice on the hardware you depend on for security.

Have just recently installed a new lock in the house. Which allows me to tinker with this one. Have learned the hard way of not picking doors that I rely on.DONT DO IT!. That was a Bad day. The thing is. When I picked it with very little tension, the lock turns about 180 degs and I hear the sound of clicks,(the pins springing back to position.) And when I attempt again In the position It turns another 180 degs and remains lock.(back to original positon). And the same thing happens again and again. (Im turning it the correct unlock way) When I insert the key it turns smoothly and unlocks the door at 360degs or more.. I'm thinking spool pins. Correct me if i'm wrong. Maybe using the flat side of the lockpick, which is the backside will do the trick.. Will wait for you guys/gals thoughts before trying this.. Thanks heeps for helping out!! Will post pics when I find my cam.. ( The lock is functioning fully) And no you limited experience greatly made me understand a bit more about locks. Cheers..

having no ability to see the lock, or to know what kind it is my first thought is you are picking it in the wrong direction, after it rotates, put a plug spinner in there and rotate it back the other way, or just try picking it in the other direction to start with. this may or may not be the problem, just a thought.

The driver pins are entering the bottom of the keyway when turned 180 degrees. If the lock gets stuck, use the flat portion of a pick to push the pins out of the keyway and turn.

Exactly what I though using the flat side of the lockpick. (the backside). And it did the trick!!. Cheers. Will start a new topic on an unusual lock. The manufacturer claims that it is "UNPICKABLE". Will take a pic of it and show you experienced ones.. That is if I find my damb camera.

"Strange lock" Which will have a picture of the lock. Just a bit about myself. I test locks for my relatives. I have recently picked the 300$ "DRAGON" door lock lock and the YALE 200$ silver pad lock, which the locksmith calimed "unpickable". I first got the interest, when I was locked out of my house 3years back. I called the locksmith, who later on that day came and opened the door lock with a "strange gun with a needle on the end". After paying the locksmith 100bucks I decided to research about the strange gun. Went to the library learned about the sheer line and the inside of a lock. And then replicated the needle using a hair pin. Tried picking a padlock with the hairpin with a hook on the end but it didnt work because I did not have anything to turn the plug with. So I got hold of a metal grinder and grinded an alen key to fit the lock and after 1 hour, I managed to pick it for the first time. After lots of practice I made my first set of lockpicks out of hacksaw blades and my own lockpick case out of ducktape and papper.... And I finally found out using google that the locksmith was using a "LOCKPICK GUN". Am currently working on a new project "vibrating lockpick"..

Check the other threads for making snap gun, your "vibrating lockpick" made from scissors from hardware store, electric toohbrush, etc. Rick

All the locks i've picked so far have not had the pins falling in the keyway at a 180 degrees yet. Until then and recently. Have been running into these lately. But thanks to the advice It is not a problem now.

But that sounds pretty crystal clear. More than a full 360 in the correct direction, and more than the distance turned by the key to unlock the door. Just round and round in the correct direction without the bolt being retracted... so magic? Please tell me you have a great language translating program that is stinking up your english, or you can explain to us how mechanically your picked lock was spinning repeatedly in the correct direction, but was unable to open a fully functional lock. I hate to be negative, but I'm with 5th. Sounds jive.

He could have picked a padlock that does not require even getting to 180 degrees before the shackle opens....
