Why is lockpicking101's logo and picture a misnomer???

Postby dsd5150 » 18 Dec 2004 23:02

Been lurking for some time... a member for a bit... why is the picture attached to the forum's logo related to two of the most useless tools on the market... a dino quik pick and a southord fiberglass jacknife pick... surely we can offer more usefull tools as our lead page as there are much more useful / intriguing tools out there... think about it... We bash both of the tools for the beginner, let's make it interesting...show them the glamour... show them the fun, sought after stuff... Let's spice it up... Can I get a Hell Ya???

Well, maybe not a hell ya, but I think you have a point.

they are both pretty bad really, and both only meant to be used as alternate tools, or novelties. So, what do you suggest for the new image?

Hmmm...

Well, it could have been worse. Picture a safety pin and a paperclip or the ever popular bobby pin up there instead.
Maybe if the new pickers saw a picture like the one I described they'd stop asking if one can actually pick a lock with such a tool.

An inside view of a lock or a picture of an ancient lock might be interesting, but if you want to focus on just lockpicking tools then I would vote for a tubular pick and maybe a tension wrench of some kind.

ive always loved this picture (its in my head at the moment) a pickgun with two picks crossed underneath sorta like the skull and cross bones. I will take that pick later this evening - or really early morning.

I vote we create a contest to come up with a new logo, and a pickset as a prize.

Anyone second the motion?

The handmade picks that I've seen by Rom and pick_maker inspire many of us to create our own. Maybe we could have a rotation of tools and a small caption giving recognition to the person that submitted / created those tools.

I just have to say here that I've always liked the current logo - it's artistic and the blue of the quickpick matches the blue of the site design.

so if the problem is that the tools shown are useless, then we're going to have a great non-ending debate about which tool is the most usefull and deserves to be put up there.

if the problem is that it doesn't represent the sterio typical hobby community tool, then we'll end up putting up safety pins and bobby pins and poorely finished hacksaw blades as mentioned above.

if we're going to put romstar/pickmaker tools up there, it could look like they're sponsoring the site, which they aren't. there's nothing worse than an excelent community website turning into a corporate marketing tool - not that putting those tools up there would do that of course, but the initial look and feel of the site is very important.

and besides - who actually looks up there except when you first come - shouldn't everyone spend most of their time reading?

that said - I don't want to spoil the party :D

I do like the pickgun and cross-bones type thing - I've thought of something similar before - with a lock face and a pick and a wrench underneath.

If it is changed I would think unmarked, generic items of whatever nature to be the least offensive. The last thing this site needs is a war over marketing.

As for what i would like to see, I think that a lock on top of a hook and tension wrench would look cool. Or maybe just a cutaway that has a pick inserted lifting a pin.

I have to admit that i do smile once in a while when i see the pic of those two. It seems ironic that a pick site like this puts up a picture of some of the worst tools around. Something about it just gets me every now and again.

It's just a picture. It never even crossed my mind to think about what was in the picture until someone started this thread.

Remember that life imitates art, not the other way around. Considering the number of newbies that come here and ask about buying jacknife picks or pick guns, I think the picture is spot on.

Consider it a knowing and ironic statement about how newcomers view lockpicking; gadgets and gizmos and James Bond stuff.
