different type of security pin

Postby critmass235 » 22 Mar 2014 23:07

Has anyone ever heard of a security pin thats the opposite of spools( gets fatter in the middle not thinner ). Instead of false setting it would false bind , making it drop the other pins behind its setting order( not binding order) it would take much just a few degrees to counter rotate and drop all your previous set pins. and it would feel like a normal false set but when you try to back out and set it. i thought of this when trying to have in depth understanding of picking and after reading a little about safe manipulation ( finding high spots or low).

I think I can picture what you are saying a top pin shaped like that would want to fall from very slight counter rotation. You should make one and throw it in with some regular spools see what happens and then let me know cause now you've got me curious lol

You are thinking of barrel pins. The shape is like this:

...-----
./.......\
/.........\
I..........I
I..........I
I..........I
\........./
.\......./
...-----
Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

Use a drill and file to make some pins like that and let us know!

For many years Yale used bottom pins that were round on the bottom and had a taper near the top. These with original mushroom top pins created a nasty sneaky pin combination.

If you look in the Buy-Sell-Trade section there is an ASSA cutaway profile cylinder for sale with these pins & you can see them.
