Beginner look for help

Postby ckielcave » 13 Dec 2014 14:17

Hi all.. just arrive on this forum ..

I have to say im 1 week old in the lock world .. It all started with a gun lock from Master.. lost the key.. search the web for a by-pass .. and got more curious about it and its mechanical.

So after many video.. i had to give a try .. i made my own pick and give it a try .. took me about 30 mins to open it.. was already time to try a other lock LOL..

So far i have only done 3 picks.. here what the look.. made it from .015 shim SS..

Image

Went to buy cheap lock to at the store.. need to work on these :)
Also bought a old one ?

Image

Here were i need some help .. for the old Yale
First question would be : How to know what model i have
How to know how old it is ?

Also how should i clean it.. it got some paint on it.. clean the interior ?

That would be a good start to my first nice lock :P

Great work on the picks and welcome to the hobby and the forum. :D

That old Yale looks really nice and is probably an 805F.

It will not pick the same way as a "regular" lock as it is a push type lock and the cylinder is part of the shackle. You can check out my post on how to disassemble and clean it here:

To remove the cylinder you have to either pick it or shim it. I chose to shim it in my tutorial.

If you just unlock it with the key, the pins will hold the key in the keyway and the bow of the key will stop you from pulling the plug out.

I think shimming it would be your best bet. I used a thin piece of metal from those "CD security tags" you can find them in DVD's, books, software boxes. If you cut them open you should get 2 or 3 good shims out of one. Just push it in the gap where the pins are between the plug and the bible. Lift each pin with your hook and slide the shim in further as you reach the shearline on each pin. Work each pin till they are all separated by the piece of metal. Then you can turn the plug and not have a key sticking out.

That spring piece does not have to be removed to take out the shackle and plug. Just moved away from the shackle so it doesn't lock in the groove that keeps the shackle in there. I only removed mine because it was rusty in there and I wanted to clean the lock.

OK, great. :D Just want to make sure that you don't get ahead of yourself.

Do you know how to assemble and reassemble a regular pin tumbler? If not there are some great videos on youtube to show you how.

You should use a plug follower to disassemble and re-assemble the lock. You can use the plug itself on this lock, but it is a little easier using a socket. Be careful when putting the pins back in the bible as those springs are far from anything that you will find in a pinning kit today. And also check that you have the pins in the correct order in the plug. They should be flush with the surface when the key is inserted.

I believe the body of this lock is cast iron.

Good Job. :D

Right, this is where I suggest you take it easy so that you don't get ahead of your self.

Here is a great video by BosnianBill. I suggest that you watch this one and spend the next month watching all of his other videos. Many of his videos show him gutting the locks and you can see how pretty much all the pin tumbers come apart and go back together the same way. Once you understand what is going on you will be able to figure out any variances that are specific to a single lock.

Anyway here is the repinning video:

Tips:

On the Yale, the last pins should be a larger diameter so you know where those go.

Driver pins are usually all the same size and usually have flat tops and bottoms.

Key pins usually have rounded or pointed bottoms where they can glide over the key and flat tops where they contact the driver pins.

If you have have the key it is very easy to pin the cylinder outside the lock by just lining the pins up with the top of the plug.

I strongly suggest you go over some beginner posts and videos so that you can get hold of the basics.

Good job and welcome to the hobby!!! I think you're hooked. :D

tank you for all the quick answer .. i seen some video of that guy will keep looking on them

also i have the key so this is already solve the key pin part

i already started to polish the lock.. well rough out ... its kind of soft yellowish metal .. but not as soft of brass ... more like aluminum bronze or some alloy of this sort.. am happy to see theres not much of pitting .. hate the one who painted it LOLOL

maybe i could go at my locksmith and see if he can make me a new key

oh well tanks again .. ill make some picture of the result .. probably gonna take me a week or to to polish it..
