gas cap pick

Hey guys,
tonight after work I was just looking around and I found a website that sells gas cap picks.

That got me to thinking. I don't remember the last time that I opened a gas cap with a key, but don't you use the same key as the ignition or doors?
All I can see that is different from a normal pick would possibly be the length, so wouldn't a standard rake or hook of some kind work? Also, if the gas cap used the same key as the doors then couldn't you just use a jiggler for that certain make of car?

No, gas caps often use a different key. It depends on the particular vehicle.

Lots of gas caps are aftermarket. But yes, I suppose an ordinary jiggler would work fine -- if it fit. (Gas cap keys/keyways are pretty small, I think.)

Generally, if a vehicle manufacturer uses a keyed gas cap there are fewer wafers/discs/pins in there, hence the size of the pick, but they normally use the same key as for the doors & ignition. (can't really speak for the US/Can market, but this is applicable to the European & Asian markets) If memory serves correctly, Ford Tibbe gas caps use the full 6 discs though...

The current trend is towards a standard non-keyed cap, in conjunction with an internal release for the fuel flap.

P.S. That gas cap pick is aimed at the single sided lock. It is also useful for single sided wafer desk locks.

I tried to use one of these for ten minutes and couldnt get it to work. I got out my rake and the cap fell open right away. I wouldt buy one. I got mine with my opening kit.

I don't bother with the keyed type of gas cap lock. There is a very nice combo one on the market, that also includes storage space for spare cash, and keys.
Might just put us Lockey's out of business tho.

Don't bother. The gas cap pick is just another novelty item to add in the 'ol tool box. Unless you are in a car theiving group, don't get it.

It's probably a good time to get in, too. In fact, I went to the station just last week and bought a gallon as an investment. At the rate prices are going, I figure I'll be able to put my kid through college with it, when the time comes.

the gas cap pick looks good but are only really any good on cheap aftermarket caps, regarding gas caps that use the main ignition key, you will find that the cap will have less wafers than the rest of the locks on the car because theives were wrenching petrol caps off and getting locksmiths to make keys then they stole the vehicle

Nice try Hojo, but we've seen the Road Warrior here in the states and we know what you have to do for a gallon of gas in Austrailia. The gas cap is the least of your worries.
