Well I don't know if this is right or not but I think the tool was to find the code of the transponder or maybe the frequency of a remote start. If anyone does know what it is I would like to know as well.

As far as getting the tool (if it exists) is probably building one yourself as I believe those would be illegal.

There were a lot of things that were made up or won't work in that movie.

If someone knows what you are talking about I am sure they will let you know. In the mean time how about you quit replying to your own post and wait.

i'm really sorry, but i do reccomend you to read the rules(no offense given) also, automotive stuff is actually for the advanced forums, and third: i don't think that it even exists, that was typical hollywood film :)

Here's a cheapo version of what you're talking about.

It's probably not for higher-tech frequencies as it might not cover the range.

The one in the movie is entirely fictional, I know this because there is a bus running from the gadget to the pick gun itself, which would be pointless if it were a device to replicate the transponder. I'm sure there are devices which replicate the transponder though, I'm just saying that's probobly not what it was in the movie.

This is more of a topic for the advanced forums, but here is some general background info that is openly available.

The transponder in a key bow is an active device, but only trasmits a signal when placed near the induction loop of the vehicle ignition. This signal contains a code (password) which must already be known to the ECU of the vehicle before the engine will start.

As far as I am aware, there is no tool for finding out what transponder codes are stored in the ECU. However, there are tools for adding and removing codes.

Some transponders can be duplicated, others are encrypted and cannot be copied. But if it is copyable, you have to have the original, which car jackers don't have.

Much like picking a lock with just a rake, the movies don't often show the real deal.

They probably wouldn't invest money in such a system unless the key took a reasonable number of decades to brute force.

don't dream !!! most of the transponders used on cars use rolling codes and a crypted radio trasmission ...

it takes a LONG time to pick up enough datas to have the possibility to decipher the crypto key

even so ... you could open the locks but it's not sure you could start the car engine later !!

even some transponder keys have been deciphered ... it is not for the average car thief knowledges ... you need to be very good in crypto, radio etc

if I remember well in an US University some opened minds had found a way to crack a particular transponder brand

in the "60 seconds" movie ... even some tools used for the story are true ... this particular one is just ..." gimmick" !!

my 2 cents !
