excuse the crude drawing, but for 30seconds on paint it gets the point across.
that's what the lock looks like and have spent about 30minutes trying to pick it already.
I THINK it may be a 'union' lock.
but since i've lost the key, and the spare key is in the room, i can't be sure.
i don't have any tools, just home-made things that are almost as crude as the drawing of the lock.
but i need into my room, cos my car keys are in there.
and other than kicking the door down, i have to pick it, but really have no clue where to start.
I would call for a locksmith but im kinda broke these days, and couldn't afford it.

The lock is on an interior door in my house, the door for my room to be exact.
i can see through it to my room....just need in there.

And i am seriously close to kicking it through, so any advice would be apreciated.

btw-im in the UK, in case that helps *shrugs*

Wear good shoes.

No, really though Dave. If I'm to guess (and I'd have to because you didn't fill in your profile) you're in Europe some where and that is either a basic warded lock, or a lever lock. You'll need a couple stiff wires bent in the shape of an L and a whole lot of luck if you're to get this quickly. If you're bent on getting it, search the forum for picking lever locks and warded locks and see if you can figure out which it is. But there is at least a pretty good chance that you'll spend a bunch of time and still not get in as quick as you need.

Costs of repairs may well be more than cost of locksmith. Just a thought.

db

Edit: Doh! Missed the last line that said you're in the UK. Ok, then, I stand by my guess. :)

If you need in it quickly, call a locksmith. It takes time and practice to be able to pick a lock. You do not want to practice on a lock that is in use.

Well, by quickly i meant within the next few hours.
so 'basic warded' or 'lever' lock.
well, it's on my bedroom door, with the long handle you push down.
there are the 2 different bolts in it-the one that keeps the door closed and the other one below it, that actually locks it.

I honestly can't afford a locksmith or a new door, but the latter seems to be the best option cos it's quick, i have a spare door in my garage, but i don't want to have to paint it.

and i have locks in my garage that aren't in use, that i could practise on, and plenty of wire in there too.
and as for practising on a lock in use-yeah, awkward angles for a start!

but thanks very much for the info, and il get cracking!

Dave, If it's a union it looks to me like a 3 lever lock. I'd be using an over lifter pick on it, but you haven't got one of those and they're a bugger to simulate. If you've got some pliers and a coat hanger and aren't an expert lockpicker i'd be trying to make a button hook.

Problem is, it ain't easy to button hook three levers. Button hook is shaped like this.

_____
I
I
I I
I________________________________________I

This end ito lock This end as a handle to turn

Assuming the lock is on the left hand side of the door...

You need to put the button hook into the lock at about the 11 o'clock angle push up and turn to 1 o'clock at the same time. Keep trying.

If you'r in North Wales o'r chester and want someone to look at it then give me a call. 01352 716056. I promise it's cheaper than fixing the door afterwards!

P.S. If locks on right then start at 1 and lift and push to 11.

To be fair. It's better to practice on a lock that's in use than kick the door down

...but it's more fun to kick the door down....so no tempting.

the lock is on the right hand side of the door, and the bolts hinges are inside my room.

But what size do i need to make that button hook?
ive got plenty of wire coat hangers about and always have pliers nearby.

Well, a wire coathanger is probably too thick. But I guess it's the best you have.

The top of the bit that goes into the lock. i.e. the bit paralel with the length of the buttonhook, needs to be about the size of the inside of the lock - the length of the spade on the key.

The down bit needs to be about the size of the keyhole, and the rest is just for leverage so however you like it. It isn't really picking, more forcing, but won't damdge the lock.

lol....going insane here trying to make it.....

so the bent section is basically the rough outline in size of the spade on the key?
and by spade are we talking just the lil bit that sticks out, or including the 'spine' of the key to it as well?

Keep in mind that you're every bit as likely to damage the door frame as the door itself, so the door you've got in the garage may not cut it. Is there the option of a window that can be entered through?

I hate to be a downer Dave, but in the time it takes you to get this picked, I suspect you could earn enough money to pay for a locksmith by holding a squeegee at a street corner.

I see you spend too much time wearing a ninja suit, and sneaking into people's houses through open windows

I would have, but I didn't have time. I was too busy posing for a picture for an lp101 t-shirt.
