That's right, but the effects are rather small on this scale. See Thermal expansion of metals

P.S. For numb fingers, I recommend thin gloves. (thin cotton cloves, for example)

-Yeah but were talking thousanths of an inch.. 0.001-0.003 contraction can make a BIG difference.

-Pick in Minnesota man, LOL just as well wear nothing if your gonna wear thin gloves. I find it best to just giver the beans bare handed while having good feel and hope I get it. if not, sit in the car and warm up to try it again. hehe :D

Lol :D
To get more practical, I suggest to clean and degrease a lock completely and then let's see if its behaviour changes when it's freezing cold.

winterpicking

Postby raimundo » 16 Mar 2006 10:48

this winter, some padlocks got wet then froze with the water inside them, so I had to thaw them with the old craklighter. but the way to pick a padlock in winter,( padlocks have to be held in the hand, its colder on the hands than a mounted lock) get some gloves with room inside or even mittens, then put the pick and tensor in each glove, poke a hole for the pick shaft to exit the glove, and same for tensor, then you can hold the pick barehand inside the mitt, and if you put the hole in the exact right place, the mitt will not interfer with the feel, Usually I use light work gloves, like the brown cotton ones unless its really cold. This works, but you will have to experiment with it to get good at it as always.
