You know, that's a really good question. I don't really hang around people who are of the type to go breaking into stuff, so I've always felt pretty comfortable teaching those I know to pick locks. I've taught a whole ton of people the basic skills of lock picking in "real life" (as opposed to ppl from this site that I've worked with via PMs and emails). Probably at least 50 by now. So.. is it possible that I've taught someone that will, at some point, misuse the skill? Oh probably. But I've always been responsible in my teaching, and I've taken every *reasonable* precaution to ensure that those I teach will not abuse the skill. Beyond that, people make their own choices and I don't lose a lot of sleep over it.

If I taught someone how to hammer a nail and they later beat the snot out of someone with a hammer, I don't think I'd feel all that personally responsible either.

I don't think you should just teach your friends unless you are 100% positive that they are going to take it up as a hobby and not use this skill in any criminal act. Ask them a few times what they plan to do with this skill. If they give you a legitimate response then you can start teaching them. I have come across people that just want me to make them some picks and teach them "the quickest way" to pick locks. Another way to see if they have a genuine interest is to start teaching them but teach them the hard basics. Such as "how a lock works", "diffrent types of locks". However don't touch on the subject of picking too much. If they are crooked, they will drop out very quickly. I they have a genuine interest, they will stay hooked.

hope this helps,
Darrel

With the whole "people are watching" thing. I suffered from pretty severe paranoia several years ago. It really hasnt gone away, however I now have a simple way of dealing with it. I assume that I may or may not be being surveiled. That I have no way to actually know whether I am or not. Now if there is something that I am doing I dont want others to see.... I am doing something that obviously goes against my moral code, and I had better stop ;) So I have adopted the "who gives a crap if Im being watched" mentality. Life is alot more peaceful now :)
