Are you raking the lock open? if so you have been slowly damageing the lock and its very possable the lock is damaged,

See what the key feels like in it, if its gritty to turn or insert or if it doesnt insert at all or turn at all likely hood is youve damaged it and its now time for you to learn how to strip the lock down and service it,

does your folding pick set have some way to replace the individual picks?
It looks nifty, but I know I put my picks through some amount of stress, and have had a couple snap.

it'd be a shame to have your most used pick on the set break, and not be able to stick a new one in-

on your front door, you have problems turning the key- have you lubricated the cylinder? if you havent, I would suggest using a teflon based lubricant to spray in it- tri flow works pretty good. old locks tend to get rather stiff, especially if you are near salt water. while a broken key might be good practice for extraction- it could also be a pain in the middle of the night lol.

if it is still very difficult to turn- you may want to bring it to a lock shop and have it repinned- usually can be done for less than 10$

as far as the picking- when i started, it was very aggravating, and i had a lot of the same questions-
the answers were all there (from replies, from asking ppl in person, from reading guides)- but so much of it is in feel, which comes from practice. all of it seems to make sense later on- but until then it can be rather exasperating.

you can buy a mortise lock, or rim cylinder lock at a shop, or maybe even a hardware store- at least this wont be as unwieldy as a whole knob.

i bought for approx 15$ a small vise- that i clamped onto my desk- its nice for holding the lock steady, and if you use the comp or whereever you put it a lot- you can always pick while reading through forums, watching tv, etc.
